Lesson 1

Students will explore how many Central American immigrants are forcibly displaced by violent conflicts created by the United States. Students will examine what the objectives of ICE are and what dismantling this arm of the Border Patrol would mean.

  1. How did US involvement in Central American countries create immigration crises? 
  2. Would immigrants be able to claim political asylum without traveling to the US? Was that information you knew before? Do you think that information is clear from the way immigration is covered in the news media? Why or why not?
  3. What types of risks do migrants take to get to the US? Would you ever make a trip like that?
  4. How is the issue of Abolishing ICE connected to US imperialism and systemic racism?
  5. Do you think what happens to immigrants when they are in US custody is fair? What would be a better alternative? 
  6. What do you think of the category of “undocumented” immigrants? Do you think it should exist? What should be the criteria for someone to be allowed to immigrate to the United States?
